Slow pc checklist:

 

  1)      Profile size. Look for large files stored on desktop. Move to H: drive and create shortcuts to desktop

  2)      Connectivity. Make sure speed of nic and switch match

  3)      Scan for spyware. Run msconfig to see spyware running at startup. Remove suspicious adware/spyware programs in add/remove programs

  4)      Run regedit. Go to HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run to see what’s running at startup. Delete known spyware programs.

  5)      Run disk defrag

  6)      Run disk cleanup (remove Temp. files, Temp. Internet files, and recycle bin)

  7)      Run Task Manager to see what processes are hogging cpu time. (ie. RouterNT)

  8)      Check internet speed at toast.net

  9)   Increase ram to 1gb (256mb is not enough)

10)      Make sure free disk space is at least 80% and memory is at least 256MB

11)   Registry edits to speed up shutdown:

           a) WaitToKillAppTimeout = 1000 - HKey_Current_user\Control Panel\Desktop

           b) HungAppTimeout = 1000 - HKey_Current_user\Control Panel\Desktop

           c) WaitToKillAppTimeout =1000 - HKey_Users\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop

           d) HungAppTimeout = 1000 - HKey_Users\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop

           e) WaitToKillServiceTimeout = 1000 - HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control

           f) AutoEndTasks = 1 - HKey_Current_User\Control Panel\Desktop

           g) AutoEndTasks = 1 - HKey_Users\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop

12)  Registry edits to speed up booting:

           a) HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher = 2
